Q: SHOULD VCFA CONVERT THE TENNIS COURTS ON THE COLLEGE GREEN INTO A PARKING LOT?

A: NO….and we need to speak up.

You may have heard that Vermont College of Fine Arts had proposed the elimination of its two tennis courts on the southwest corner of the college green and have proposed replacing the courts with a 28-car parking lot. VCFA has not yet received City approval for its controversial project, but they hope to do so before the end of the year.

Fortunately, there is an opportunity this Monday evening, November 25, 2013 for you to influence VCFA’s proposal.

This Monday, November 25th at 6:00pm at Noble Hall VCFA will be presenting their plan and they may use neighborhood feedback to modify their proposal before seeking City approval next month.

I think New Yorkers, especially those in Lower Manhattan, need to become more aware of the Howard Hughes Corporation’s plans for the South Street Seaport as recently described in the NY Times. Of serious concern is the razing of the old Fulton Fish Market building (see my photo below with the Brooklyn Bridge in the background) and the construction of a high-rise building in its place (see the illustration in the Times article). (Less is known about what will happen to the upland buildings west of FDR drive.) One option that the community should think about is using the Fulton Fish Market space to make a permanent public market facility for the New Amsterdam Market. Rumor has it that there will be a public hearing on this in January…Stay Tuned for more info.
